The Legend of 489 Kanals
داستانِ ۴۸۹ کنال
Every great institution begins with a measurement nobody has checked. Ours began with a rope, an afternoon, and a man whose confidence considerably exceeded his training.
He walked the boundary once. He arrived at 489 kanals. When asked whether he might walk it again, he explained that the first walk had gone well and that a second could only introduce doubt. This reasoning was accepted and has governed the Darbar's approach to verification ever since.
The figure has never been revisited. It has, however, been engraved, embroidered, carved into two gateposts and set in gold upon the ceremonial crest. At this point the land would be obliged to comply.
A second walk could only introduce doubt. This reasoning was accepted and has governed us ever since.
